Secondary to surgery, anti-wrinkle injections are the most effective way of reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing specific muscles of the face. Preventative treatments can start as early as mid to late 20s, targeting areas such as forehead, between the eyes and sides of the eyes.
Botulinum toxin (often referred to as Botox) is injected into specific muscles of the face to block signal pathways of the nerves. This causes the targeted muscles to relax, subsequently smoothing out wrinkles and preventing further creases of the affected areas.
Following anti-wrinkle injections, facial lines and creases caused by ageing and muscle movement are diminished, leaving behind a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Unfortunately, not all treatments are suitable for all. Please check if any of the following contraindications apply:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Active infection near the site of injection
- Known allergy or hypersensitivity to the product
- Dysphagia or impaired swallowing as the product may travel between muscles
- Anti-wrinkle injections within the past three months
After anti-wrinkle injections, the following side effects may be experienced:
- Bruising at the site of injection
- Itching or dryness
- Tenderness
- Occassional headaches lasting up to two weeks
- Ptosis (drooping eye lid)
- Blurred vision or visual disturbance
- Localised muscle weakness
- Constipation
- Nausea and / or generally feeling unwell
- Allergic reaction
- Loss of nerve supply
Typically, the results of anti-wrinkle injections last 3-4 months, however, it is common for first time clients to experience results for just two months, in comparison to those who have regular injections, for whom it can last up to six months.
Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, plus skin conditions and the areas treated are examples of variables that affect treatment outcome.
A two week review is often recommended to assess results.
